Saturday, April 4 was another work day with Teddy and Emma helping us dig out planter beds, remove screws from the black locust log frames, and cut up and haul out the logs for a dump run. Last week we did a dump run where we weighed in on the scale at 1,400 lbs. That was a surprise.
The garden is now ready for the new layout and new planter beds.
Later in the afternoon, our friend and carpenter Rich came over to install the big redwood planter boxes. The new planter boxes are 2-1/2″ thick and 24″ wide after cutting one edge off. They were about 28-34 inch slabs. The corner blocks are 3″ x 3″ redwood. All screwed together with ledger-lock screws and covered with hardware cloth on the bottom to keep out gophers.

Only 1/3 of the garden has the boxes. We will finish opening up the entrance next weekend so the tractor will fit. After that, we’ll have the small Kubota tractor move in composted horse manure to fill these 5 boxes. This will test out the space and pathway before mapping out the next section. Probably about a 4-month process (March – June).
