Stone fruit trees were planted in the garden between 2015 -2016 to add shade but also variety. The apple trees in the Heritage Orchard are huge, and we wanted to have semi-dwarf size trees. I planted the trees on the east side so that they did not shade the vegetable beds.
The trees were planted during a transition time in the garden when river rocks (used for borders) were being removed to other areas. Basically, the trees were not planted in designated planter beds. When we rebuilt the garden – Garden Redesign 2017-2019, the black locust planter beds and clay tubes were built around the fruit trees.
