What to do with a Locust tree

Black Locust trees are amazing trees even though they are not native to Ben Lomond.  They have tannic acid, and the wood does not seem to rot.  We have been using them for our garden fence and our perennial garden borders.

This past winter, three trees fell over in the winter storm of 2017.  They basically leaned themselves over, falling into Love Creek.  We are using every ounce of the trees:

  • brush will be chipped for walkways
  • limbs will be turned into raised garden beds
  • trunks will be cut into 2 1/2 feet high pieces to outline the driveway
  • random pieces are cut into firewood
